Cookies and local storage
Short version: this site runs no analytics, carries no advertising and sets no tracking cookie. One value is written into your browser's local storage so that the notice at the bottom of the screen stops appearing once you have answered it.
The one value we store
When you answer the notice, your browser saves a single entry recording that choice. It lives in local storage on your own device, it contains nothing that identifies you, and it is never transmitted to us or to anybody else.
If you clear your browser's site data, that entry disappears and the notice appears again on your next visit. There is nothing to recover and nothing to restore.
What we deliberately do not use
There is no analytics script on this site, so we do not know how many people read a chapter, which chapter they read or where they came from. There is no advertising network, no conversion pixel, no social sharing widget that reports back and no fingerprinting.
This has a cost: we genuinely cannot tell which chapters are useful. That is why the contact page asks you to phone and say so, and why several chapters have been rewritten on the strength of a phone call rather than a statistic.
The contact form
Submitting the form does not set a cookie. What it does is send your message to the desk, where it is read by one of the two people who run the site and deleted within twelve months of the last contact about it.
A technical session value may exist briefly while the form is being submitted, purely to guard against duplicate and automated submissions. It carries no information about you and does not persist after the page is closed.
Hosting and server logs
The company that hosts the site keeps ordinary technical logs, as every host does, recording requests and the addresses they came from for security and fault-finding. Those logs are the host's and are not combined with anything by us.
We do not pull reports from them, we do not build profiles from them and we have no interest in doing so.
Embedded material
Photographs on this site are our own and are served from the same place as the pages. There are no embedded videos, no map frames, no font services called from elsewhere and no comment system, which is why nothing third-party is able to set a cookie on you here.
Should that ever change, this page will say exactly what the new element is and what it stores before it goes live.
Managing it from your side
Every browser lets you block or clear local storage and cookies for an individual site, usually under privacy or site settings. Blocking it here costs you nothing except that the notice will reappear each time you arrive.
Nothing on this site is hidden behind accepting the notice. All six chapters, the checklists and the charges page work identically whether you accept or decline.
Your choice, and changing it
Declining is a real option with no consequence. Accepting only stores the one value described above and nothing else follows from it.
To change your mind, clear this site's data in your browser and answer the notice differently when it reappears. If you want to raise anything about this page, the desk address and the telephone number on the contact page both reach us.
